  Some of the important forestry programmes are listed below:  
     
   
     
  This scheme was being implemented in Bangalore (Rural) and Bangalore (urban), Kodagu, Kolar, Bidar and Mandya districts. This scheme included raising of Social Security Plantations, supply of bamboos, Astra ole and house construction materials for the welfare of Scheduled Caste people. No fresh planting has been taken up under this scheme in the current year.  
     
   
  This scheme has been launched for the benefit of Scheduled Tribe people residing in and around the forest areas of Bangalore (Rural), Chitradurga, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Mysore, Chamarajanagar Gulbarga and Udupi districts. The main objectives of the scheme were raising of Social security plantation, supply of Astara ole and and small timber for construction of houses. No fresh planting has been taken up under this scheme in the current year.  
     
   
  This scheme is being implemented in all the 27 districts of the state for afforestation, restoration of ecological balance & augmentation of the forest cover by the active participation of cultural and religious institutions under the umbrella of Cana Samvardhana Trust. Under the scheme Forest Department will raise 5 Crores seedlings over a period of 3 years & distributed to institutions, farmers & public free of cost at the planting site through Vana Samvardhana Trust. This scheme is being implemented from 2001-02 & during this year their is a provision for 300.00 lakhs of allocation, out of this Rs. 182.626 lakhs are spent. The programme is to supply 2 Crores seedlings free of cost at the planting site 1.726 Crores seedlings have been distributed till December end. During 2002-03 there is a programme to raise 2 Crores seedlings for free distribution under this scheme.  
     
   
  The erstwhile D.P.A.P & EAS schemes were merged & a new scheme viz. S.G.R.Y is being implemented from 2002-03. This scheme envisages for providing employment opportunities for rural poor, while creating essential rural infra structure including drought proofing measures like soil and water conservation works, afforestation works in water shed basis. Under this scheme the wages of labors is paid by each & in the form of food grains. During the current year the scheme is being implemented in Belgaum, Udupi, Kolar & Dakshina Kannada Districts. During this year 2002-03 an allocation of Rs. 323.00 lakhs has been provided and Rs. 62.545 lakhs has been spent for 293 ha of plantations & other allied activities.  
     
   
  Tanks have played very important role in the life of Bangalore City since historic time. It is stated that about 262 Tanks existed in 1960 within Bangalore city and this number has been gradually decreasing because som eof the Tanks have been converted into residential localities and some have been used by state departments for public purposed like bus stands and stadiums.  
     
  The Government of Karnataka constituted an expert committee vide G.O. No. PWD-82-IMB-85, dated: 26-07-1985 headed by Sri. N. Lakshman Rau, IAS (Rtd.,) to study the problems and to suggest remedies for preservation, restoration and prevention of pollution of tanks in the metropolitan area of Bangalore. The committee has reviewed the conition of these tanks and recommended handing over the Tanks within the city to the Karnataka Forest Department for restoration and conservation of Tanks.  
     
  After examining the recommendations of the expert committee, Government of Karnataka have issued an order vide No. PWD-82-IMB-85, dated: 11-02-1988 entrusting the Karnataka Forest Department and other agencies to develop the tanks in Bangalore City. As per the Government order dated 11-02-1988, the Multipurpose Engineering Sub-division of the Minor Irrigation Department have handed over the tanks to the Karnataka Forest Department. The agencies fixed for development of tanks are indicated in Table.
