  Introduction  
  The Zoo Authority of Karnataka is registered under Societies Registration Act, 1960, and functioning at Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Garden’s Premises, Mysore. The followingeight Zoos recognised by the Central Zoo Authority were brought under the control of Zoo Authority of Karnataka by a G.O. dated: 20-07-2002.

  3. Children’s Park and Mini Zoo, Bellary
  4. Mini Zoo, Kittur Rani Chennamma Nisargadhama, Bhutaramanahatti, Belgaum
  5. Indira Priyadarshini Pranisangrahalaya, Anagod, Davangere
  6. Children’s Park-cum Mini Zoo, Binkadakatti, Gadag
  7. Children’s Park-cum Mini Zoo, Gulbarga
  8. Tiger and Lion Safari, Tyavarekoppa, Shimoga
 
     
  The Member Secretary in the rank of Chief Conservator of Forests is the Chief Executive of Zoo Authority of Karnataka.  
     
  The main objectives of Zoo Authority of Karnataka are  
 
  1. To breed and rear the endangered species of the fauna of India and the world with the object of saving them from extinction and the restocking other Zoos and eventually to enrich the depleted fauna in Wild.
  2. To Serve the cause of wildlife conservation directly by arousing in the people an interest in and concern for wildlife by organising exhibitions and seminars etc.,
  3. To study the habits and behavior of animals and birds in their natural surroundings as well as in captivity.
  4. To procure such animals as are required for the Zoos in the State of Karnataka by purchase or exchange, from other states of India or from abroad.
  5. The dissemination of knowledge and information about our wildlife by publication of bulletins and journals etc.,
  6. To provide technical advice for the preparation of plans and development of Zoos, Zoological Gardens.
  7. To conduct research on various problems of the animals in Zoos, Zoological Parks.
 
     
   
  A rescue centre has been established at Bannerghatta National Park creating facilities for accommodating 70 Lions and 30 Tigers rescued from various circuses at a total cost of Rs. 226.50 lakhs. The entire amount is provided by the Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi. The Rescue Centre created at Bannerghatta National Park is the first to be completed in all respects and to be operational in the Country. The following rescued circus animals have been sheltered here so far.  
     
 
  • A Veterinary Hospital at Bannerghatta National Park has been established at Bannerghatta National Park. A Centre for identification of animal diseases has also been set up at Bannerghatta National Park with the help of Institute of Animal Welfare and Biologicals. This is in addition to the existing hospital in Mysore Zoo.
 
 
  • Establishment of Bear Safari and Tiger Exhibit
 
 

This centre at Bannerghatta National Park was formally inaugurated on the 30th November 2002. At present 20 Bears and 6 Tigers are housed in the centre.

 
 
  • International Standard Butterfly Park
 
 

The Government of India have approved the project for Rs. 381.25 lakhs for establishment of a Butterfly Park at Bannerghatta National Park. All the followup action on the project has been initiated and consultations with various agencies involved have began.

  • Karanji Lake
 
 

The Karanji Tank at Mysore is one among the five lakes in Mysore City. The Restoration and Development of this tank has been taken up by Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysore under Asian Developmental Bank (ADB) Scheme. Sponsored by Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development & Finance Corporation (KUIDFC). The estimated cost is Rs. 122.00 lakhs and the entire amount shall be plrovided as grant through KUIDFC. The work will be carried out in two phases. Once the Karanji Tank Project is conpleted it would become one of the major tourists attraction.

 
 
  • Construction of Moated Enclosure for Nilgiri Langurs
 
 

The Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi, has approved construction of moated enclosure for Nilgiri Langur in Mysore Zoo at the estimated cost of 38.05 lakhs with 100% funding from them. The above construction was proposed as per the directions of the evaluation committee of the Central Zoo Authority. The above works was taken up during the current year and the work was completed in accordance with the norms. Presently the animals are housed to exhibited in this new enclosure in simulated natural habitat.
